Dependent Personality Disorder

What is dependent personality disorder?

Someone with dependent personality disorder finds it difficult to be on their own and fears they cannot look after themselves or be independent. They want to be taken care of but so much so that people may describe them as clingy and needy.

It is diagnosed more often in women and about 0.6% of the UK population have it.

Symptoms

Symptoms include:

•           avoids conflict and disagreement with other people’s opinions

•           finds it hard to stand up for themselves which can lead to abusive relationships

•           doesn’t make independent decisions, even about important life decisions

•           finds it hard to start tasks alone

•           constantly seeks relationships for support and companionship

•           takes extreme measures to gain comfort from others

•           feels helpless when on their own

Causes

The cause of dependent personality disorder is not known, but thought to be due to a combination of genetics, environment, social and psychological factors. Early childhood interactions and reactions teaches the child how relationships work and what behaviour gets certain responses. If the environment they were brought up in is confusing or abusive or there is neglect this could make dependent personality disorder more likely to develop. Temperament and coping skills when in stressful situations at a young age can also affect development.

Outlook

Like other personality disorders the symptoms may reduce in older age, but this is more likely if therapy is given. Without help other conditions and behaviours may develop. These could include; depression, phobias and alcohol or drug misuse. The earlier help is given the better results and quality of life there will be.

Treatment

Psychotherapy is recommended for those with dependent personality disorder. Cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), interpersonal therapy, psychodynamic and group therapy have all been shown to reduce the symptoms in some people with dependent personality disorder. Which therapy is right for who will dependent upon their personal differences. Therapy will aim to develop better coping skills and interactions with others which will build confidence.
