Distractions - not getting bored!

Grace

Sometimes we need distracting from those whirling thoughts inside our brains and sometimes we are just a bit bored.

The worst thing about being in one of those two mind sets is that you can't think of what to do at the time.

To help you take your mind off those thoughts or get you actively doing something else it's a good idea to write a list of things you could do.

It may seem like a simple idea and you might be thinking, "I can think of loads of things I like doing", or "I don't really like doing much", "so there's no point in me writing a list".

But you can keep coming back to your list and when you have time to think about these things activities will pop into your mind just as easily as they will pop straight back out again!

So get them down in pen and ink (or on your smartphone) when you think of them.

Ideas could include:

  • Reading (be specific, write down which book, this also applies to the other ideas...)

  • Listening to music (what genre? which songs? who?)

  • Singing

  • Running (in a park)

  • Hiking

  • Walking a dog (borrow one, there are websites you can sign up to for borrowing dogs)

  • Calling a friend or family member or other support number (charity/helplines)

  • Going to the gym

  • Doing sport (swimming, cycling, surfing, fishing)

  • Watching sport

  • Watching your favourite TV programme/series/film

  • Art and crafts (painting, sewing, drawing, photography, writing poems, make a scrapbook)

  • Volunteering

  • Have a relaxing bath with nice smelling soaps

  • Pamper yourself (paint your nails, get your hair done)

  • Playing games (computer games, puzzels)

  • Wash your car

  • Visit a zoo

  • Re-arrange your room

  • Clean the house
