Building Self-esteem

Do things you enjoy-

  • Work- work can provide a source of identity, friendship, routine and a salary. A job can be a distraction, with some people thriving in busy situations, whereas for others it may be a source of fulfilment, for example from unpaid volunteer work. The vital component is that you feel confident and supported in your role, and have a good home-work life balance.

  • Hobbies- hobbies can be a variety of different activities, from dance to computer games. Sometimes picking up a new hobby can build self-esteem, such as choosing something you naturally have an interest in or something you have always wanted to try. Slowly learning a new skill or improving on existing ones show you can achieve something and build confidence.

Building positive relationships can also help to build confidence. Try to associate with people who build you up rather than criticise. Being around positive people who have strong self-image will help you build your own. Surrounding yourself with negative people who encourage negative beliefs will reinforce faulty thought processes which are leading to low self-esteem.

Being assertive isn’t about pushing your views onto someone else; it is about being able to communicate your values with mutual respect. Tips to being more assertive:

  1. Pay attention to your own body language as well as the words you say.

  2. Try to express your feelings if you have been upset, wait until you are calm and can explain clearly what the matter is.

  3. Say ‘no’ to unreasonable requests or tasks.

  4. Ask for more time and support if you feel you need it.

  5. Try to speak in first person, using ‘I feel’ allows you to explain your feelings without appearing aggressive or scared.

Looking after your physical health also leads to higher self-esteem and confidence. Increasing the amount of physical activity leads to the release in endorphins, also known as the ‘feel-good’ hormone, which help improve mood. Another component of physical health is sleep. Lack of sleep can exaggerate feelings of negativity. Diet is also important, having regular meal times with plenty of water and vegetables will help you feel happier and healthier.

Learning to identify negative beliefs is the first step in building better self-esteem. For example asking yourself the questions ‘What do I feel are my negatives?’ and ‘What negative things do I think other people think about me?’. With practice, it is important to focus less on these negatives and think about the positive things. Writing a list or getting someone close to you to help can help identify your positives even if you can’t maybe see them yourself.
